Northern Kwa-Zulu Natal is one of those regions in South Africa which is still relatively unexplored. You can still find deserted beaches, quiet areas to snorkel and game reserves with a difference. Some parts of it are only accessible by 4×4 but there are many areas quite easy to get to and definitely worth the road trip.
Here’s our pick of places to visit to visit in Northern KZN:
1. Self-Drive Hluhluwe Umofolozi Game Reserve.
South Africa has such a wealth of game reserves to choose from but one thing about this reserve is that set in the mountains and so much of your drive includes dramatic views looking down upon hilly savannahs, wildlife drinking at large waterholes and majestic mountains folding in on each other as far as the eye can see. It really is best to drive in and around with your own car to enjoy the magic unfolding in your own time. Be sure to take your camera, binoculars and do not get out of vehicle unless at rest stops or restaurants.
2. St. Lucia.
This little laid-back town was first named Santa Lucia in 1557 when the Portuguese chose this name. You can find everything here from coffee shops, to surf shops to restaurants and small B&B’s. From here you can do a self-drive into the iSimanagaliso Wetlands and have the chance to see a plethora of wildlife in one of the country’s richest eco-systems. Book a boat tour with Shakabarker Tours and explore the area by lake too and sip coffee whilst watching hippos roam.
3. Cape Vidal.
Pack your goggles and snorkel and head to Cape Vidal for some of the best underwater experiences. You can walk straight off the beach to see crayfish, moray eels, sting rays, natal moonies and more right near the reef. For those with diving certificates, there are of course incredible dives to be had in this area too. If you’re more of a beach bum, stick to the sand for sunning, beach ball games and relaxing. This beach is huge and there’s a big chance you’ll find yourself all alone here ( except of course during the festive season).
Jozini is fast becoming a very popular hub in Northern KZN. There’s game to be seen on the shores of Lake Jozini, the bridge overlooking the dam wall, house boating cruises and the little town itself. Take this opportunity to get out your car to meet locals, buy some mielies ( corn on the cob) from a local flaming it on a grid or buy Zulu beads from roadside vendors.
